What’s happening in South Carolina?

This year, lawmakers considered Senate Bill 402 (SB 402) and House Bill 4135 (HB 4135) that, if enacted, would have impacted your access to vision care.

The 2026 South Carolina State Legislative Session has adjourned, and Senate Bill 402 (SB 402) and House Bill 4135 (HB 4135) did not advance. While the bills are no longer active, similar proposals may be reintroduced in future sessions.

Potential impacts on consumers:

  • Increase the price you pay for eye exams and glasses

  • Limit discounts available through eye care providers

  • Make it difficult to determine which providers and products offer the best value for your budget

It's important to keep an eye on legislation to help ensure vision care remains affordable and accessible for South Carolina residents. Staying informed can help ensure Alliance for Affordable Vision Care voices are reflected if similar proposals are considered in future sessions.
